Safety case preparation

In many countries it is a legal requirement for railway infrastructure owners, managers and maintainers, train operating companies and product manufacturers to provide evidence that a systematic approach has been applied to the consideration of the level of safety, and that safety risks have been reduced to acceptable levels.

A Safety Case is a commonly used means of providing such a demonstration of safety.

A Safety Case demonstrates that all hazards that could affect safety have been properly considered, and contains evidence of the elimination, control and mitigation of safety risks.

Vectra has been assisting railway infrastructure owners, managers and maintainers, train operating companies and product manufacturers in all elements of the preparation of Safety Cases for many years.

Safety Case Preparation & Management

Our staff have considerable experience in the preparation of safety case documentation, and in liaising with Independent Safety Assessors and National Regulatory Bodies. We can assist with safety cases required for individual products and equipment through to complete railway transportation systems

Hazard Identification & Analysis

We can also provide comprehensive support in hazard identification and analysis.
We have expertise in the application of specialist hazard and fault identification techniques such as Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies.

Quantified Risk Assessment (QRA)

Quantified Risk Assessment uses probabilistic modelling to; assess the safety risks arising from system hazards and faults; determine the areas of the greatest risk; and as a means of targeting hazard elimination and mitigation measures required to ensure that safety risks are acceptable. Vectra has considerable experience in the application of QRA within the railway transportation industry.

ALARP Assessment & Cost Benefit Analysis

Vectra's consultants have significant experience in determining whether the safety risks associated with a product, item of equipment, or complete railway transportation system are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). This includes experience in the use of Cost Benefit Analysis techniques. We can also assist in the optimisation of expenditure on safety risk elimination and mitigation measures, ensuring that expenditure is targeted where it will achieve the greatest safety benefit.
